If your computer has been crawling lately — taking forever to open apps, freezing mid-task, or just feeling sluggish — you're not alone. It's one of the most common complaints we hear. The good news: most slow PCs have a fixable cause. Here are the five most common culprits and what you can do about each one.

1. Too Many Programs Running at Startup

Every time your computer boots up, it launches a list of programs in the background — some you use every day, some you've never touched. Over time this list grows, and every item on it is stealing memory and CPU before you've even opened a browser.

How to check (Windows 11/10): Right-click the taskbar → Task Manager → Startup apps. Anything with a 'High' startup impact that you don't use daily can be disabled. Common offenders: Spotify, Discord, Teams, OneDrive, Adobe updaters.

The fix: Disable everything you don't need at boot. You can still open those apps manually — disabling startup just stops them from loading automatically. Most people see a noticeable difference in boot time and early responsiveness.

2. Your Hard Drive Is Nearly Full

Windows needs free space on your drive to function properly — it uses it as 'virtual memory' and for temporary files during normal operation. When your drive is over 85–90% full, performance tanks.

How to check: Open File Explorer → This PC. If your C: drive bar is red or you're under 15 GB free, this is likely your problem.

The fix: Run Windows Storage Sense (Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense) to auto-delete temp files and old downloads. Check your Downloads folder — most people have gigabytes of forgotten installers in there. If you're still tight, an external drive or cloud storage for photos and videos frees up space fast.

3. Malware Running in the Background

Malware — viruses, spyware, cryptominers — is designed to run quietly in the background. A cryptominer in particular will push your CPU to 80–100% constantly, making everything else grind to a halt. If your computer suddenly got slow after opening an email attachment or downloading something, this is worth checking first.

How to check: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → CPU column. Sort by highest usage. If something unfamiliar is consistently above 20–30%, that's a red flag.

The fix: Run Windows Defender (it's built in and genuinely good) — search 'Windows Security' → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan. If Defender doesn't find it, Malwarebytes Free is excellent for a second opinion. Never pay a pop-up telling you to call a number or download something.

4. Not Enough RAM

RAM is your computer's short-term memory — it holds everything currently open. Modern Windows with a browser, a few tabs, and a couple apps running can easily hit 6–8 GB. If your machine has 4 GB, it's constantly swapping data to your much-slower hard drive to compensate. This is called 'paging' and it's brutal on performance.

How to check: Task Manager → Performance → Memory. If you're regularly above 80% usage with your normal workload, more RAM will help.

The fix: Upgrading RAM is one of the cheapest and most impactful upgrades you can make. Most laptops and desktops can go from 4 GB to 8 or 16 GB for $25–$60. It's not always DIY-friendly — RAM type and slot availability vary by machine — but a tech can handle it quickly.

5. Dust Buildup and Overheating

Processors are designed to throttle their speed when they get too hot — it's a safety feature to prevent damage. If the inside of your computer is clogged with dust, the cooling fans can't do their job, temps climb, and the CPU deliberately slows itself down. This is extremely common on laptops that are 2+ years old.

How to check: Download HWMonitor (free) and look at your CPU temps under load. Anything consistently above 90°C while just browsing is too hot. Also listen — if the fan is screaming constantly, cooling is the issue.

The fix: For desktops, a can of compressed air through the vents every 6–12 months works well. Laptops are trickier — the heatsink often needs to be removed and the thermal paste replaced, which is a job for someone who's done it before.

Sometimes the issue is a failing hard drive, a deeper malware infection, or hardware that's simply reached the end of its useful life — and catching those early saves you from losing data.
